Hip Hop is a genre of popular music developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans and Latino Americans in the Bronx borough of New York City in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. While “hip hop” refers to the broader cultural movement (which includes DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti), the term is widely used synonymously with rap music.
Hip hop music is built on two primary pillars: the vocal delivery (the MC) and the instrumental backing (the beat/the DJ or producer).
Hip hop originated at neighborhood block parties in the Bronx. Pioneers like DJ Kool Herc began isolating the instrumental percussion “breaks” of popular funk and disco songs, using two turntables to extend the break indefinitely. To keep the crowd engaged, “Masters of Ceremonies” (MCs) began speaking rhythmically over the beats.
The late 80s and 90s are often considered hip hop's creative peak. This era was defined by dense, jazz-infused sampling (pioneered by acts like A Tribe Called Quest and Wu-Tang Clan), complex lyricism, and the rise of West Coast G-funk (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg), which utilized heavy synthesizer basslines and slower tempos.
By the 2000s, the center of hip hop shifted toward the American South, particularly Atlanta. This gave rise to Trap music, characterized by rapid, skittering hi-hats, booming 808 sub-basses, and darker, synthesized melodies. Trap eventually became the dominant sound not just in hip hop, but in global pop music.
The advent of platforms like SoundCloud democratized distribution. “SoundCloud Rap” emerged, featuring distorted bass, emotional or emo-influenced lyrics, and a punk-rock DIY aesthetic. Contemporaneously, UK and Chicago Drill music gained global prominence with its sliding 808s and aggressive, syncopated drum patterns.
Hip hop has always been a genre defined by repurposing available technology. In the modern independent and LB Wiki ecosystem, the genre has fully embraced the digital revolution:
