Naevis (also stylized as nævis or 나이비스) is a South Korean virtual artificial intelligence artist under SM Entertainment. Originally introduced in 2020 as a key character within the lore of the K-pop girl group aespa, she made her official solo debut as a musical artist on September 10, 2024.
Background and Lore
Within the SM Culture Universe (SMCU), Naevis is described as an Artificial Emotional Intelligence (AEI) system who resides in the digital realm known as KWANGYA. Her original narrative purpose was to help the avatars of the aespa members (known as their “ae”) connect with their real-world human counterparts. She essentially acts as a bridge between the virtual FLAT and the Real World.
Her backstory involves materializing in KWANGYA in 1991 and eventually seeking to step into the Real World in search of freedom. Unlike purely generative AI artists created by independent producers, Naevis is a high-budget corporate creation by SM Entertainment, utilizing advanced AI-generated voice technology, motion capture, and hyper-realistic 3D modeling.
Career History
2020–2023: Introduction via aespa
Naevis first appeared as a supporting character in aespa's storyline. Her visual model and voice were featured across various SMCU episodes and aespa music videos, including “Next Level” (2021), “Savage” (2021), “Girls” (2022), and “Welcome To My World” (2023), the latter of which she officially featured on as a guest vocalist. Her growing popularity among K-pop fans led SM Entertainment to develop her into a standalone artist.
2024: Official Solo Debut
In August 2024, SM Entertainment released a series of concept teasers confirming Naevis's solo debut. She officially debuted on September 10, 2024, with the release of her digital single “Done”. Her debut was highly publicized as SM Entertainment's first dedicated AI idol, featuring a mix of AI-generated content, futuristic visuals, and a distinctly electronic K-pop sound.
Later in 2024, SM Entertainment and MBC signed a business agreement to develop virtual content, paving the way for Naevis to make appearances on traditional South Korean music broadcasts like Show! Music Core. She also made concert appearances, including a notable participation during aespa's 2024 Live Tour - SYNK : Parallel Line.
2025–Present: Continued Music Releases
Following the success of her debut, Naevis continued to release music as a virtual soloist. She released her second solo single, “Sensitive,” on August 7, 2025, further establishing her futuristic pop identity and expanding her IP universe.
